KUANTAN – A dramatic scene unfolded in an industrial area of Kuantan recently when two foreign nationals attempted to evade capture by climbing into trees during a large-scale enforcement operation.
The incident occurred as part of Ops Together, a multi-agency crackdown on illegal immigration and related offences in the Pahang district.
The operation was led by the Enforcement Division of the Malaysian Immigration Department of Pahang State, involving sixteen officers.
They were supported by a wide coalition of agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Police, Kuantan City Council, National Security Council, Road Transport Department, National Anti-Drug Agency, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Department of Civil Defence, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and the Malaysian Fisheries Department.
This joint effort underscores the comprehensive approach taken by authorities to address complex security and social issues.
Acting on intelligence reports and public complaints, the team targeted a public industrial zone suspected of harbouring individuals living or working in Malaysia without valid documentation.
During the sweep, officers checked a total of 143 foreigners of various nationalities. The thorough inspections aimed to verify the legal status of workers and residents in the area, ensuring compliance with national immigration laws.
While the majority of those inspected cooperated with authorities, two individuals chose a different path. In a bid to escape detention, they scaled nearby trees, hoping to avoid the enforcement team.
Despite their efforts, the operation resulted in the arrest of sixteen foreigners in total. These individuals were detained on suspicion of committing various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
All sixteen detainees have been remanded for fourteen days under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
They are currently being held at the Kemayan Immigration Depot, where further investigations are underway.
The legal process will determine the specific charges and subsequent actions, which may include deportation and bans on re-entry into the country.
The Pahang State Immigration Department has reiterated its commitment to enforcing immigration laws strictly.
Officials have stated that firm legal action will be taken without compromise against those found violating regulations.
This stance is intended to serve as a deterrent to both illegal immigrants and employers who may be engaging undocumented workers. Authorities have also called on the public to play an active role in maintaining community safety.
Residents are urged to come forward with information regarding the presence of illegal immigrants in their localities. Such tips are invaluable in helping authorities plan and execute effective operations.
The department emphasises that public cooperation is essential in combating the issue of illegal immigration across the state.
The involvement of multiple agencies in Ops Together highlights the interconnected nature of these violations. Issues such as public health, drug enforcement, and traffic safety often overlap with immigration breaches.
By coordinating efforts, the government aims to address these challenges holistically, ensuring that all aspects of the law are upheld.
This operation in Kuantan serves as a reminder of the ongoing vigilance required to protect national sovereignty and security.
As enforcement capabilities improve and inter-agency collaboration strengthens, the ability to detect and address illegal activities becomes more effective.
The recent arrests demonstrate the resolve of the authorities to maintain order and legality in the workforce and residential areas.
Employers are reminded of their legal obligations to verify the status of their employees. Hiring undocumented workers can lead to severe penalties, including heavy fines and imprisonment.
The government continues to educate business owners on the importance of compliance to prevent inadvertent involvement in illegal labour practices.
The community’s role remains crucial. By reporting suspicious activities, citizens contribute to a safer and more regulated environment.
The Pahang State Immigration Department encourages continued dialogue and cooperation between the public and enforcement agencies to achieve these shared goals.
