Kuching Mayor Launches Drainage Upgrade at Lorong Chawan 3

KUCHING – The Mayor of Kuching South, Dato Wee Hong Seng (pic), handed over the site for the drainage repair works at Lorong Chawan 3 to the appointed contractor in a ceremony here today, officiating a four-month infrastructure project.

The project will include approximately 300 metres of cement drainage. It means the scope of works involves repair and reconstruction of damaged sections, improving water flow and performing civil works to reinforce the entire system. The project is designed to cut back on water overflow, which improves the danger of flash flooding from very heavy rain events.

During the handover, Dato Wee Hong Seng said a functioning drainage system was crucial for community safety, traffic flow and residents’ well-being. He said the project showed MBKS’s initiatives to upgrade basic infrastructure as well as address issues brought up by the people.

Joining the mayor to witness the commencement of works were En Taufiq Abdullah, deputy city secretary; Cr Albert Tay; and Penghulu Tan Heng Kee. Their attendance underscored the work between city officials and community leaders to make the project a success.

Residents have been warned that they might face temporary inconvenience during the construction phase. MBKS also promised to continue monitoring the development progress in order for it to be completed on time and meet quality standards.

In areas like Kuching that are urban and have been developed, drainage has always been a problem; where there is development, the rains will come. MBKS can lessen the risk of flash floods that will certainly bother society and damage property by carrying out upgrades.

The project at Lorong Chawan 3 is part of MBKS’ broader plan to upgrade drainage systems throughout the city. Other housing developments have conducted similar initiatives, suggesting an active approach to urban planning and flood prevention.

The official also emphasised that the efforts are not only about repairing existing infrastructure but also about actually protecting the city’s drainage network for future needs. MBKS aims to develop a more resilient system with flow capacity and improved concrete sections that are able to withstand extreme weather events.

The mayor reiterated that the council would continue to prioritise work on infrastructure improvements. “This project is required to provide safety and free-flowing movement of traffic, as well as community welfare,” he said.

With construction of the new Michener Centre set to commence, residents are reminded that patience and support during this necessary process will usher in long-term success. In closing, MBKS would continue to provide practical infrastructure solutions that work and bring impacts towards improving the quality of life for Kuching’s city residents.
