KUCHING (Aug 16): A sudden downpour may have delayed the Kuching Street Parade 2025, but the “Parade of Lights” returned brighter than ever, showcasing unity, culture, and community spirit in the heart of the city.
Themed ‘Parade of Lights’, the event began at 6pm from Travillion Commercial Centre with Kuching North Datuk Bandar Dato Hilmy Othman officiating the flag-off. More than 2,000 participants from 54 contingents — ranging from government agencies, NGOs, neighbourhood groups, universities, and the private sector — filled the streets with colour and rhythm.
Excitement grew as the crowds cheered, but at about 7.15pm, heavy rain swept across the city, forcing both spectators and performers to seek shelter. Many participants stood their ground under umbrellas and ponchos, determined not to let the rain wash away the spirit of celebration.
When the skies cleared, the parade resumed, returning with even more energy. Floats glowed brighter against the wet streets, and performers danced with renewed enthusiasm, their illuminated costumes reflecting beautifully on the rain-soaked roads.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, later joined the celebration at Padang Merdeka at 8pm, alongside his wife Datin Sri Enn Ong. Also present were Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and several other dignitaries.
The highlight of the evening was a cultural dance by the National Department of Culture and Arts, followed by breathtaking showcases from parade contingents. With glowing floats, traditional dances, and Sarawak-inspired designs, each group turned the streets into a moving display of heritage and creativity.
Despite the weather, Kuching’s Parade of Lights proved to be more than just a celebration — it was a reminder of resilience, togetherness, and the power of community spirit to shine through challenges.
