KUCHING – In the spirit of Mother’s Day, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillors Cr Chai Ju Loon, Cr Judy Kho, and Cr Albert Tay, visited several local markets and hawker centres this morning to share festive cheer with the community.
The initiative saw flowers and Shòu táo bāo, also known as longevity buns, distributed to hawkers, mothers, and members of the public.
The gesture symbolised blessings of happiness, good health, and family unity, while also reflecting the multicultural harmony that defines Kuching South.
The team’s visits included Foochow Market, Bintawa Market, Temple Foodcourt, Sungai Apong Market, and Pending Jetty.
Each stop provided an opportunity to engage directly with hawkers and residents, many of whom work tirelessly to support their families and contribute to the vibrancy of the city.
Speaking during the programme, Dato Wee highlighted the vital role mothers play in shaping strong families and compassionate communities.
He noted that many hawkers in Kuching South dedicate long hours daily to sustain their households, and their sacrifices deserve recognition.
“Mother’s Day is not only a celebration, but also a reminder of the importance of love, respect, care, and family values. A strong city begins with strong families and caring communities,” he said.
The mayor further emphasised that Kuching South’s development strategy has always been people-centred, with inclusiveness, family values, and community well-being forming the foundation of its growth.
He explained that initiatives such as this Mother’s Day programme are part of broader efforts to foster a caring and harmonious city.
The distribution of longevity buns carried cultural significance, symbolising long life and prosperity, while the flowers represented appreciation and respect.
