KUCHING — Kota Sentosa Assemblyman YB Wilfred Yap has welcomed the Sarawak Government’s decision to place Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, the implementing agency of the Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS) project, under the State Financial Secretary (Incorporated) as a State-Owned Enterprise. He described the move as a timely and important step to strengthen governance and accountability in one of Sarawak’s most significant public infrastructure undertakings.
In a press statement, Wilfred Yap said the restructuring reflects the state government’s commitment to managing large-scale development projects with greater prudence, transparency and long-term responsibility. According to him, placing Sarawak Metro under a formal state-owned enterprise framework will allow for clearer lines of accountability and improved financial discipline, particularly in managing public funds.
He expressed cautious optimism over the decision, stressing that ambitious transport projects must be supported by realistic planning and sound financial management. He noted that self-sustainability is a key principle that should guide the KUTS project, ensuring cost control and long-term viability while safeguarding public finances from unnecessary strain. He added that such an approach is essential to prevent future generations from bearing excessive financial burdens.
Speaking on behalf of the people of Kuching, Wilfred Yap highlighted that residents will experience the day-to-day impact of the project throughout its implementation. He emphasised the importance of proper and effective monitoring to minimise inconvenience caused by construction works, traffic disruptions and related activities. He said public comfort and safety must remain a priority as the project progresses.
Wilfred Yap also called for strong coordination and clear communication between implementing agencies and the public. He said the concerns of residents, commuters and small business owners must be listened to and addressed through timely updates and responsive mitigation measures. Development, he stressed, should not come at the expense of livelihoods or daily routines.
Looking ahead, the Kota Sentosa ADUN said he will continue to advocate for transparent reporting, strict procurement practices, independent audits and ongoing public engagement. He believes these measures are necessary to ensure the KUTS project delivers real and lasting benefits to the people of Kuching, while maintaining public trust in the management of state-led infrastructure projects.
