Teen Motorcyclist Killed in Tragic Crash on Lawas–Punang Road

LAWAS, Nov 7: A 15-year-old secondary school student lost his life after the motorcycle he was riding collided head-on with a car along Kilometer 9, Lawas–Punang Road near Kampung Sungai Kudong, this afternoon.

Lawas District Police Chief, DSP Liong Tindan, said the accident occurred at around 12.30 pm and involved a Mitsubishi Xpander driven by a 39-year-old local man and a Yamaha Lagenda motorcycle ridden by the teenager.

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim was riding alone from Kampung Punang towards Lawas town. Upon reaching a bend in the road, the victim is believed to have lost control of the motorcycle, veered into the opposite lane, and collided directly with the oncoming car,” said Liong in a statement.

The impact caused both vehicles to sustain severe damage to the front portions. The car driver escaped unharmed, while the motorcyclist sustained critical injuries to the head and shoulders.

“The victim was rushed to Lawas Hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at 1.30 pm,” Liong added.

The victim’s body has been sent to the Lawas Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Police have classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

DSP Liong urged any witnesses or road users who may have seen the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation by contacting the nearest police station.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder for all road users, especially young motorcyclists, to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and maintain safe speeds — particularly when navigating sharp bends and rural roads where visibility is limited.
