CEBU – Malaysia and Cambodia have pledged to deepen their bilateral relationship, with leaders from both nations emphasising cooperation across economic, educational, and security sectors during talks held at the ASEAN Summit.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet in Cebu, where discussions centred on strengthening collaboration in trade, finance, agriculture, halal industries, higher education, and tourism.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of expanding people-to-people connections and welcomed greater student and tourist exchanges between the two countries.
Security concerns also featured prominently. Anwar underscored Malaysia’s determination to work with Cambodia in tackling cross-border crime and job scams, issues that have become increasingly troubling in the region.
The leaders agreed that closer coordination in law enforcement and governance is vital to safeguard communities and maintain regional stability.
Economic cooperation remains a cornerstone of the relationship. Recent figures show Malaysia-Cambodia trade rising significantly, with bilateral exchanges expanding by nearly 50 per cent in the first quarter of 2026.
Malaysian exports to Cambodia grew strongly, while imports also recorded notable increases, reflecting the growing economic interdependence between the two nations.
Hun Manet expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s role in supporting Cambodia’s development, particularly in areas such as halal certification and infrastructure.
He noted Cambodia’s interest in expanding halal food exports, with Malaysia providing technical expertise to strengthen certification systems and industry standards.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to ASEAN as a platform for peace and prosperity. Anwar stressed that in a world facing geopolitical uncertainty and economic challenges, ASEAN must remain empowered to promote stability and mutual trust among member states.
Both Malaysia and Cambodia view ASEAN as central to advancing shared interests and ensuring resilience against external pressures.
Beyond bilateral ties, the meeting reflected broader regional dynamics. ASEAN leaders in Cebu have been discussing trade, energy security, and responses to global conflicts, underscoring the importance of collective action.
Malaysia’s and Cambodia’s renewed partnership is seen as part of this wider effort to strengthen ASEAN’s role in addressing regional and global challenges.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their long-standing friendship and shared vision for a stronger, more connected Southeast Asia.
The emphasis on education, tourism, and economic growth alongside security cooperation signals a balanced approach to building sustainable ties that benefit citizens in both countries.
