KUCHING – The Mayor’s Cup Storytelling Competition 2026, organised by North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), concluded successfully on 26 April at Majma Mall, showcasing the creativity and confidence of young talents from local primary schools.
A total of 69 students participated in the event, which served as a platform to nurture storytelling skills, encourage self-expression and strengthen language proficiency among the younger generation.
The competition also aimed to instil creativity and effective communication, vital qualities for future leaders.
The closing ceremony and prize presentation were officiated by Mr Mohamad Faisal bin Adenan, Acting Director of DBKU.
He commended the participants for their dedication and praised the competition as a meaningful initiative to inspire children to embrace the art of storytelling.
The results highlighted outstanding performances across several schools. The top prize went to SK (A) Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir Hassan with their team “Madrasah Narrator”.
SK Merpati Jepang secured the runner-up position with “Legendary Wordsmiths”, while SK RPR Jalan Astana [SK RPR(1)] claimed third place.
Consolation awards were presented to SK Bandar Samariang’s “Princess SKBS” and SK St Thomas’ “The Final Cut Crew”.
Special recognition was given to Nur Aina Marisa binti Mohd Dzulasri from SK Merpati Jepang, who received the Best Storyteller Award. The Hope Group Award was presented to Puteri SKBS from SK Bandar Samariang.
DBKU expressed its appreciation to all participants, noting that the competition reflects the city’s commitment to fostering creativity and confidence among schoolchildren.
The organisers emphasised that such programmes are vital in producing a generation that is brave, innovative and competitive, aligning with broader efforts to strengthen human capital development in Kuching.
Storytelling competitions have long been recognised as effective tools for enhancing language skills and encouraging cultural appreciation.
By providing young students with opportunities to perform before an audience, DBKU hopes to instil resilience and self-assurance that will benefit them in both academic and personal pursuits.
The Mayor’s Cup 2026 not only celebrated individual talent but also reinforced the importance of community support in nurturing future generations.
DBKU has pledged to continue organising similar initiatives to ensure that Kuching remains a hub for youth development and creative excellence.
