Metal Art Boosts Rural Economy in Sadong Jaya

SADONG JAYA – A metal sculpture initiative is being promoted as a significant catalyst for generating income and creating new opportunities for young people in rural Sarawak.

This art form is seen as a viable skill that could underpin the development of the local creative economy.

Batang Sadong Member of Parliament, Rodiyah Sapiee, emphasised that with serious and sustained effort, this craft can become a substantial source of revenue.

She highlighted the diverse commercial applications for such artwork, including use as garden and office ornaments, tourism merchandise, and as symbols of local identity.

She delivered these remarks during the closing ceremony for a Metal Welding Sculpture Course held at the Kasat Arca Studio in Kampung Sungai Bilis.

The event was also attended by Sadong Jaya Sub-District Assistant Administrative Officer, Abdullah Sam Yusup.

Rodiyah pointed to the success of local artisan Mohamad Kasat Bujang Narawi as a powerful example.

From a humble village workshop, he has achieved international recognition, receiving the Promising Entrepreneur Award (RBC 2016) and an Elite World Record for crafting the world’s largest sculpture of a Sape from used metal.

“If Kasat could start from a small workshop in the village but is now recognised worldwide, what other reason is there for us not to try?” she stated, encouraging local youth.

The potential for metal art extends beyond direct sales. Officials suggest it could be developed into a community-based tourism product, helping to brand the Batang Sadong district as a hub of talent and creativity.

Rodiyah envisions a future where visitors are greeted by impressive metal sculptures created by local youth, fostering immense community pride.

This initiative is bolstered by collaborations with several national and state bodies, including Kraftangan Malaysia, the Sarawak Craft Council, and Majlis Seni Sarawak.

Such partnerships aim to strengthen the support ecosystem for rural artists. Rodiyah reaffirmed her commitment to backing youth development programmes that are founded on skills and creative talent.
