Man Escapes Death After 4WD Skids and Crashes on Jalan Bakong, Miri

MIRI – A 40-year-old man narrowly escaped death after his four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle skidded and crashed into several trees along Jalan Bakong near SK Kelapa Sawit 2 here late last night.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), their operations centre received an emergency call regarding the incident at around 10.30pm. Following the alert, a rescue team from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene, located about 56 kilometres away.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the victim’s vehicle had veered off the road and ended up in the bushes after skidding. The impact caused severe damage to the 4WD, including a badly dented roof which left the driver trapped in his seat.

JBPM said firefighters quickly carried out an assessment before using special rescue equipment to pry open the door and free the victim.

“The driver, believed to be 40 years old, suffered only a minor head injury despite the heavy damage to the vehicle. He received initial treatment from medical staff at the Simpang Bekenu Health Clinic,” a JBPM spokesperson said.

The entire rescue operation ended at around 12.20 midnight.

This incident once again highlights the importance of extra caution when driving at night, especially on rural and less illuminated roads such as Jalan Bakong. Authorities continue to advise road users to remain alert and drive within speed limits to prevent such accidents.
