MIRI – Miri City Council has intensified its enforcement efforts to tackle illegal dumping and unauthorised structures on public road verges, following a recent operation at Eastwood Industrial Estate.
The initiative was carried out to restore order and cleanliness in the area, where scavengers had erected makeshift structures and waste had been discarded unlawfully.
Council officials emphasised that road verges are reserved for public infrastructure and must remain unobstructed to ensure safety and proper drainage.
Authorities explained that illegal occupation and dumping not only breach local by-laws but also create hazards for the community.
Blocked drainage systems can lead to flooding, while accumulated waste contributes to pollution and health risks.
The Council stated that such practices undermine the city’s commitment to maintaining a safe and sustainable environment.
Before dismantling the structures, notices were issued to those responsible, giving them time to remove the materials voluntarily.
However, after continued non-compliance, enforcement teams proceeded with the removal in accordance with legal provisions.
To prevent the site from being misused again, concrete culvert blocks have been placed at the entrance to restrict vehicle access.
This measure is intended to deter repeat offenders and safeguard the area from further dumping activities.
The Council reminded residents, landowners, and businesses that unauthorised use of road reserves or improper disposal of waste will not be tolerated.
Offenders may face fines or prosecution if found guilty of violating the regulations. Officials stressed that strict enforcement will continue to ensure public spaces remain accessible and safe.
Community cooperation has been highlighted as a crucial factor in sustaining these efforts. The Council expressed appreciation to enforcement agencies, local leaders, and members of the public who supported the operation.
Their involvement reflects a shared responsibility in protecting the environment and upholding civic order.
Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of illegal dumping to the Council so that investigations and enforcement can be carried out promptly.
By working together, the Council believes Miri can maintain its reputation as a clean and orderly city, setting an example for other districts in Sarawak.
