MIRI – The achievements of young taekwondo athletes in Miri were celebrated during the Prize Giving and Flag Presentation Ceremony for the Sarawak contingent, held at the Bumi Kenyalang Taekwondo Gym on Monday night.
Organised by the Bumi Kenyalang Taekwondo Club, the event recognised athletes who excelled at the PTNS-SSC-MSNS State Taekwondo (WT) Kyorugi & Poomsae Championship 2026, while also marking the official release of athletes who will represent Sarawak at the upcoming 15th TM-KBS-MILO National Junior Taekwondo Championship 2026 in Negeri Sembilan.
The ceremony was officiated by Cr. Sean Huang Hong Siong, representing Miri Mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang.
In his speech, Adam Yii congratulated the athletes for their strong performances at the state-level championship held in Bintulu on 16–17 April.
“Participating in a tournament like this not only tests physical ability, but also builds discipline, self-confidence and a high fighting spirit among young athletes,” he said.
The Miri contingent recorded impressive results, securing three gold medals, seven silver medals and 18 bronze medals from 36 athletes.
This success was attributed to the dedication of the athletes, the guidance of coaches, and the unwavering support of parents and club management.
Adam Yii emphasised that taekwondo has the potential to become a key platform for producing high-performance athletes capable of representing Sarawak and Malaysia at major sporting events such as SUKMA, the SEA Games and even the Olympics.
At the same ceremony, four athletes and a coach received the Sarawak contingent flag as a symbolic gesture of their release to compete at the national championship scheduled for 15–17 May in Negeri Sembilan.
Club Chairman Ang Chung Khiong expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements, noting that each medal symbolised sacrifice, discipline and teamwork.
“Each medal won symbolises the sacrifice and high discipline of the athletes, in addition to the continuous support from coaches and parents,” he said.
He also encouraged the athletes to uphold sportsmanship and discipline while striving for excellence at the national level.
The ceremony served not only as recognition of current achievements but also as motivation for young athletes to continue pursuing success and bringing pride to Sarawak.
