The 2026 Motorcycle Driving Licence Assistance Programme (B2) for DUN N.74 Pujut was launched on 11 July at the Grand Palace, beginning at 8.15 am.

The programme received 240 applications, with 199 participants successfully selected to take part. Each participant is required to pay only RM250 to secure a Class B2 motorcycle licence, a significant reduction compared to the usual costs.

Organisers explained that the subsidy is designed to assist students, young people, and families who may otherwise struggle with the expense.

A valid driving licence is widely recognised as more than just a legal requirement. It provides access to greater opportunities, including employment and education, while also ensuring safer mobility.

For many, the ability to travel independently to work or school is a crucial step towards improving quality of life.

The initiative has been welcomed by local leaders as a practical measure to support youth development. By lowering the financial barrier, the programme encourages responsible road use and helps participants prepare for future opportunities.

Authorities have emphasised that the licence not only facilitates daily travel but also enhances employability, particularly in industries where mobility is essential.

During the launch, participants were reminded of the importance of responsible driving. Organisers stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging all licence holders to avoid illegal racing activities and reckless behaviour.

“Never get involved in illegal Mat Rempit or racing activities. Road safety is our shared responsibility for ourselves, our families and all road users,” participants were told.

The programme was made possible through cooperation between JPJ Miri, local driving institutes, and community partners. Their involvement ensured that the initiative could be delivered smoothly and at reduced cost.

Organisers expressed gratitude to all parties for their contributions, noting that such collaborations are vital in promoting public safety and community wellbeing.

Road safety campaigns in Malaysia have consistently highlighted the risks associated with unlicensed driving.

Statistics from the Road Transport Department show that unlicensed riders are more likely to be involved in accidents, underscoring the importance of ensuring that young people obtain proper training and certification.

The assistance programme in Pujut is therefore seen as a proactive step in reducing these risks. Participants will undergo the necessary training and assessments before receiving their licences.

Organisers expressed hope that all selected individuals will successfully complete the process and obtain their Class B2 licence without difficulty.

The programme is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives in other constituencies, particularly where financial constraints have prevented young people from pursuing legal certification.

Community leaders have also pointed out that initiatives like this contribute to broader social goals. By promoting safe and legal driving practices, the programme supports public safety, reduces accident risks, and fosters a culture of responsibility among youth.

It also strengthens ties between government agencies and local communities, demonstrating how collaborative efforts can deliver tangible benefits.

The Motorcycle Driving Licence Assistance Programme reflects ongoing efforts in Sarawak to balance development with social responsibility.

As more young people gain access to affordable licensing, the long-term impact is expected to include safer roads, improved employment prospects, and stronger community resilience.
