MUKAH — Kidney treatment capacity at Mukah Hospital expanded Monday with the installation of a new hemodialysis machine donated by St. Peter & Paul Mukah Church, witnessed by Tellian Assemblyman Royston Valentine.
The Fresenius 4008S Next Generation Hemodialysis Machine—funded through local Catholic community contributions—bolsters the hospital’s renal care services amid growing patient demand.
Rev. Father Joseph Sebastian formally handed over the equipment at the hospital’s dialysis unit, where Valentine noted the facility now operates 16 active machines, including a dedicated unit for Hepatitis B patients.
“This addition addresses critical capacity constraints,” the assemblyman stated, revealing 29 patients currently undergo treatment in three daily rotational sessions. “Previously, some residents sought care in distant districts due to limited local facilities.”
The donation coincides with Sarawak’s rising chronic kidney disease prevalence, which increased 27% since 2020 according to state health department data. Post-ceremony, Valentine and Rev. Sebastian distributed patient gifts through the SABERKAS Prihatin Program and Mukah Anti-Drug Squad’s Prihatin initiative, underscoring community support for long-term care recipients.
Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Ashadatul Amira Musa accepted the equipment alongside Mukah District Officer Peleadzman Ahip, parish council chairman Kevin Kisui, and community leaders. The upgrade enhances healthcare access in Central Sarawak, where over 15% of renal patients previously travelled 100+ km for treatment.
