MUKAH – Police in Mukah have detained a 27-year-old man following a roadside arrest that later revealed positive results for drug use.
The incident occurred on Jalan Mukah-Oya on Saturday afternoon, when officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Mukah District Police Headquarters (IPD Mukah) noticed the suspect behaving suspiciously near a local higher education institution.
The man was stopped at approximately 2.30 pm and taken into custody for further checks. Initial inspection at the scene did not uncover any prohibited substances or items.
However, once at the police station, a urine test confirmed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system.
Authorities have confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Under this provision, individuals found guilty may face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine not exceeding RM5,000, and mandatory supervision for a period not longer than three years.
Police sources indicated that the suspect, employed as a manual labourer, has a history of drug-related offences. He is currently being held at the Mukah Police Station while investigations continue.
Officers are expected to examine his background and connections to determine whether he is linked to wider drug abuse activities in the district.
Drug abuse remains a pressing concern in Sarawak, with enforcement agencies regularly conducting operations to curb its spread.
National reports highlight that methamphetamine continues to be the most commonly abused drug in Malaysia, with rural districts also facing challenges due to accessibility and trafficking routes.
