Nearly 500 Attend Healthy Malaysia Agenda Tour In Bau

BAU – The Serembu Culture and Community Centre buzzed with activity on Saturday as the Healthy Malaysia National Agenda Tour (ANMS) made its stop in the Bau District. Organised jointly by the Kuching Division Health Office and the Bau District Health Office, the event attracted nearly 500 visitors from Serembu and surrounding areas, demonstrating strong community interest in proactive health management.

The programme was graced by Yang Berhormat Dato Miro Anak Simuh, the State Assemblyman for N18 Serembu. His presence underscored the political support for initiatives aimed at empowering community health and promoting wellness at the grassroots level. Dato Miro has been a consistent advocate for programmes that bring essential services directly to the people, ensuring that healthcare is accessible and inclusive.

A wide array of activities was curated to engage participants of all ages and backgrounds. The event featured comprehensive health screenings, including the National Health Screening Initiative (NHSI) and physical fitness assessments conducted via the mobile WoW Truck. These services allowed residents to check vital health indicators such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index, providing early detection opportunities for potential health issues.

Dental health was also a key focus, with check-ups provided by teams from the Kuching Division Dental Office and Bau Hospital. Additionally, a blood donation campaign was held, encouraging residents to contribute to the national blood supply. Such drives are critical for maintaining adequate reserves for medical emergencies and surgeries across the state.

Beyond clinical services, the tour included educational and recreational components. Health education exhibitions offered valuable information on disease prevention, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles. For families, there were engaging activities such as a children’s coloring competition and a healthy menu cooking contest. These interactive segments aimed to instill good habits in younger generations while making health awareness enjoyable for parents.

Community spirit was further fostered through sports and cleanliness initiatives. A darts competition added a fun competitive element, while the “1 Hour Malaysia Clean-up” (1HMCU) gotong-royong competition encouraged participants to take pride in their local environment. This combination of health and hygiene reinforces the holistic approach of the ANMS, linking personal well-being with communal responsibility.

The success of the event was bolstered by the involvement of numerous strategic partners. Agencies such as the Bau District Office, Bau District Council, and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) collaborated to deliver a comprehensive service package. Other contributors included the Social Welfare Department, Bau Agriculture Office, and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) Sarawak.

Private and non-governmental entities also played significant roles. Partners like ASIANA, the Serembu Native People’s Association, and the Malaysian Volunteer Department (RELA) helped facilitate logistics and community engagement. The participation of the Ministry of Internal Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) ensured that the Rahmah MADANI sales offered affordable goods to attendees, addressing economic aspects of well-being.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Dr Irwilla Binti Ibrahim, the Bau District Health Officer, who represented the Kuching Division Health Officer, Dr Johnny Pangkas. In her address, Dr Irwilla expressed profound gratitude to all agencies, volunteers, and community members who contributed to the event’s success. She highlighted the importance of such collaborative efforts in reaching out to the public effectively.

Dr Irwilla emphasised that the noble efforts of the health sector in conducting the ANMS Tour should continue to raise awareness and promote healthy living practices. She noted that these initiatives are aligned with the broader objectives of the Healthy Malaysia National Agenda, which seeks to create a healthier nation through preventive care and community empowerment.

The positive response from the Serembu community indicates a growing awareness of the importance of regular health checks and lifestyle modifications. By bringing services to the doorstep of residents, the health offices have removed barriers to access, making it easier for people to prioritise their well-being.

Such events also serve as platforms for inter-agency cooperation, allowing different departments to work towards a common goal. The synergy between health, social welfare, and local government bodies ensures a more integrated approach to community development. This model of collaboration can be replicated in other districts to maximise impact.

As the tour moves to its next destination, the lessons learned in Bau will help refine future programmes. The feedback from participants and organisers will be invaluable in tailoring services to meet specific local needs. The ultimate aim is to sustain momentum and ensure that health remains a top priority for all Malaysians.

The Healthy Malaysia National Agenda Tour in Bau has set a high standard for community engagement. It demonstrated that when resources are pooled and communities are involved, significant progress can be made in public health outcomes. The event stands as a testament to the collective commitment of the government, partners, and citizens towards a healthier future.
