PADAWAN – The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has undertaken preventive drainage works at 7th Mile to reduce the risk of flash floods in the area.
The operation involved clearing blockages within the drainage system to improve water flow and ensure proper discharge during periods of heavy rainfall. Officials explained that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure resilience and protect residents from flood-related disruptions.
Flash floods have been a recurring concern in several parts of Sarawak, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas where drainage systems are often strained during intense downpours. By removing obstructions, MPP aims to enhance the efficiency of the drainage network and minimise the likelihood of water accumulation.
The council has assured that monitoring will continue, with maintenance works scheduled periodically to sustain the system’s performance. Authorities emphasised that proactive measures are essential in safeguarding communities, especially as unpredictable weather patterns pose increasing challenges.
Residents welcomed the initiative, noting that preventive works are crucial in maintaining safety and reducing damage to property. Local councils across Sarawak have been urged to adopt similar measures to ensure that drainage systems remain functional and capable of handling sudden surges in water levels.
The 7th Mile project reflects MPP’s broader commitment to community welfare and infrastructure upkeep. By prioritising flood prevention, the council seeks to provide a safer and more conducive environment for residents and businesses in the area.
