BETONG – The Sarawak Premier and President of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari bin Tun Abang Openg, reaffirmed the party’s unwavering commitment to developing the state for the benefit of all ethnic communities.
Speaking at the PBB Special Assembly for the Betong Zone on Friday, he emphasised that the party serves as the foundational pillar of the state government, working tirelessly to ensure progress is shared equitably.
The assembly, held at the Datuk Kalong Ningkan Hall, served as a critical platform for evaluating the performance of the PBB-led government under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.
With the 13th State Election (PRN13) approaching, the gathering aimed to identify areas for improvement while consolidating past successes.
The event brought together approximately 3,000 delegates from 14 PBB branches across the Betong Zone, reflecting the strong grassroots support for the party in the region.
Abang Johari stressed the importance of self-reliance and local leadership in safeguarding Sarawak’s interests. He noted that the state cannot depend on external forces for its development and security.
Instead, he argued that PBB is best positioned to lead these efforts, ensuring that the rights and welfare of all races are protected.
His remarks highlighted a sense of ownership and responsibility among party members to drive change from within.
“We are not arrogant and conceited, but we are working on our own land to develop Sarawak because we cannot depend on others, we ourselves are the ones who defend ourselves, and only PBB can lead the effort to defend Sarawak for all races,” he stated.
This sentiment resonated with the audience, reinforcing the narrative of local empowerment and autonomous decision-making.
The Premier also framed the party not merely as a political organisation but as a large family united by a common vision.
He described the collective goal as building a more glorious future for Sarawak, where diversity is viewed as a strength rather than a source of division.
By fostering unity and cooperation, he believed the state could achieve greater heights in socio-economic development.
To demonstrate tangible progress, Abang Johari highlighted significant investments in the Betong district. He revealed that an allocation of RM180 million had been approved specifically for improving infrastructure and utilities in the area.
This funding is expected to enhance the quality of life for residents, addressing long-standing needs in roads, water supply, and other essential services. The announcement underscored the government’s focus on delivering measurable results at the local level.
“We have raised the standard of Betong with an allocation of RM180 million that has been approved to develop infrastructure and utilities,” he said.
This investment is part of a broader strategy to reduce regional disparities and ensure that rural areas benefit from state development initiatives.
The Premier urged attendees to maintain solidarity and avoid letting differences hinder progress. He encouraged them to leverage their diverse backgrounds to advance the people’s welfare.
“Let us continue to strengthen unity, strengthen cooperation and work together. Do not let differences divide us. Instead, make diversity a strength to advance the people and develop Sarawak,” he added.
Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, Abang Johari called for full cooperation from all party machinery in the Betong Zone.
He expressed confidence that with unified support, PBB would secure victory in all contested seats. The emphasis was on mobilising resources and volunteers to ensure a successful campaign outcome.
The event included the officiation of the assembly and the recitation of the PBB Pledge by the delegates. This ritual symbolised their renewed commitment to the party’s principles and objectives.

Several high-ranking officials were present, including PBB Deputy Presidents YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah ak Embas and YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan.
Also in attendance were the Speaker of the State Assembly, Vice-Presidents, members of the Supreme Council, and representatives from the PBB Women’s and Youth wings.
Members of the State Legislative Assembly and Parliament, along with invited dignitaries, joined the gathering, demonstrating broad support for the party’s agenda.
The assembly concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among the delegates. By focusing on inclusive development and local empowerment, PBB aims to maintain its position as the leading political force in Sarawak.
