Political Stability in Sarawak Enables Targeted Financial Aid for Citizens

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak Government’s ability to implement various financial assistance initiatives for its citizens is largely attributed to the region’s sustained political stability and sound economic management.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Office (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, stated that the governing coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), has maintained consistent leadership under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. This stable governance has allowed for a focus on economic growth and fiscal sustainability, while simultaneously addressing the welfare of the people.

“Some may claim the government is solely focused on increasing state revenue, but the truth is that over 50 per cent of that revenue is channelled back into the people’s welfare and infrastructure development, especially in rural areas,” he explained during an interview with UKAS on Tuesday.

One of the key welfare initiatives highlighted is the Special Financial Assistance programme, under which more than 50,000 Sarawakian university students across Malaysia receive RM1,200 annually. The programme has an overall allocation of RM60 million. Additional support includes the provision of learning tools such as laptops and vouchers for purchasing books.

Datuk Abdullah also mentioned the Sarawak Consumer Goods Assistance Scheme (SKAS), which distributes aid ranging from RM250 to RM800 to eligible recipients. The initiative has already reached over 850,000 Sarawakians, with an estimated budget of RM450 million.

These programmes reflect the state government’s commitment to ensuring that economic gains are equitably shared and that vulnerable communities—particularly students and low-income families—receive the support they need.
