LUNDU – A substantial financial injection of RM847,000 has been allocated to accelerate rural infrastructure development within the Opar State Legislative Assembly constituency.
The funds, channelled through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), are set to transform basic amenities for residents in several remote villages, marking a significant step towards improving rural livelihoods.
The initiative was officially launched with a site handover ceremony in Kampung Bitokan 2, attended by the area’s State Assemblyman, Billy Sujang.
The event signalled the commencement of multiple projects designed to enhance the agricultural sector’s efficiency and bolster the overall well-being of the local community.
By upgrading critical infrastructure, the government aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural living standards.
Among the key initiatives is the Agricultural Road Upgrading Project for Kampung Bitokan 2 Cemetery, valued at RM170,255.
This project involves the expansion and paving of a 250-metre stretch of road, alongside the construction of a 200-metre cobblestone path.
Additionally, two concrete culvert units will be installed to improve water flow and road durability. These improvements are expected to facilitate easier access for residents and support local agricultural transport.
In Kampung Perian, another major upgrade is underway with a budget of RM158,010. This project includes the construction of a 320-metre paved road and a 20-metre concrete section, complemented by the installation of a concrete culvert.
Similarly, the Sungai Perian Area Agricultural Road Upgrading Project, costing RM166,940.84, will see the creation of a 310-metre paved road and an 80-metre concrete road, along with necessary culvert installations.
Kampung Paon is also benefiting from these developments through a RM193,015 project. This extensive work includes paving a 400-metre road, installing two concrete culverts, and conducting drainage cleaning works along a 120-metre stretch.
These measures are crucial for maintaining road integrity during heavy rains and ensuring year-round accessibility for farmers.
Addressing flood mitigation, the Kampung Temaga Melayu Drainage System Upgrading Project has been allocated RM159,200. This initiative focuses on constructing a 260-metre open concrete ditch to enhance drainage efficiency.
The improved system aims to reduce the risk of local flooding, protecting homes and agricultural land from water damage during monsoon seasons.
Billy Sujang emphasised the importance of adherence to quality and timelines during the handover session. He reminded all appointed contractors that these projects represent a trust placed in them by the people.
Strict compliance with technical specifications and contract conditions is mandatory to ensure the longevity and safety of the infrastructure.
“Every project that is implemented is a trust for the people. Therefore, I want all parties to ensure that the work is completed according to the schedule and specifications so that the benefits can be enjoyed by the residents without any delay,” he stated.
The Assemblyman highlighted that systematic and high-quality development serves as more than just physical improvement.
It acts as a catalyst for socio-economic growth, strengthening the agricultural backbone of the region and simplifying daily routines for residents.
Reliable infrastructure allows farmers to transport goods more efficiently, potentially increasing their income and market reach.
The four agricultural road projects are scheduled for completion within a six-month window, from 23 June to 22 December 2026.
The drainage system project in Kampung Temaga Melayu has a slightly extended timeline, with completion expected by 6 January 2027. This phased approach ensures that resources are managed effectively while delivering timely results.
Also present at the ceremony were Lundu Deputy District Officer Anwar Fakhriyuddin Matamit, GKCDA Administrative Officer Mohd Badrulhisyam Muta’ee, and a representative from the Irrigation and Drainage Department, Abdul Hadi Abdul Rahman.
Their participation underscored the collaborative effort between various government agencies to deliver tangible benefits to the rural population.
This investment reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to equitable development. By prioritising rural constituencies like Opar, the government seeks to ensure that no community is left behind in Sarawak’s progress.
The successful implementation of these projects will likely serve as a model for future infrastructure initiatives in other rural areas across the state.
