KUCHING – The Sabah contingent for the Borneo Games Kuching (BGK) 2025 touched down at Kuching International Airport at 9.10 am on Tuesday, greeted with a warm welcome as they prepare to begin their campaign.
The athletes arrived in high spirits, with the state’s badminton players leading the delegation. They are regarded as one of Sabah’s strongest medal prospects in this year’s games.
According to Sabah Sports Council Deputy Director (Sports Sector) Wong Hsiao Hsien, the contingent has been undergoing months of intensive training to gear up for the event.
“For BGK 2025, our team has been preparing intensively. Each sport has undergone both decentralised and centralised training sessions across our facilities in Sabah,” she said.
Wong also underlined the value of the Games as more than just a sporting competition.
“This Borneo Games is important because it provides athletes with regional-level exposure and the opportunity to compete against teams from outside Malaysia.
It also strengthens ties between the Borneo contingents and fosters friendship. For many young athletes, it is a stepping stone towards national and international championships,” she explained.
The arrival of the badminton squad signals the start of Sabah’s participation in the regional sporting showcase, where athletes from across Borneo will compete under the spirit of sportsmanship and unity from 24 to 28 September.
