KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has confirmed an allocation of RM7.05 million for the construction and upgrading of the new State Stadium, a project aimed at enhancing sports facilities and supporting the growth of local athletics.
Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, announced that the Sarawak Sports Council (SSC) will oversee the project, ensuring that the stadium is equipped with modern infrastructure to meet both national and regional standards.
The scope of the development includes the installation of seating, a new LED lighting system, an LED screen, ticketing counters, storage facilities, toilets, and prayer rooms.
The stadium will also be fitted with improved amenities to provide a comfortable environment for athletes, spectators, and organisers.
Datuk Gerald Rentap explained that the stadium is intended to serve as a venue for the Sarawak Premier League, providing a dedicated space for competitive events and fostering greater participation in sports across the state.
He highlighted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a strong sporting culture and nurturing future talent.
The project was raised during the third day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting, where Tupong Assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman sought clarification on the details of the development.
In response, Datuk Gerald Rentap outlined the stadium’s role in supporting structured training programmes and community-based sports initiatives.
He noted that the collaboration between SSC, schools, and community organisations will be central to the stadium’s long-term impact.
“You want to have a coach who is a teacher, organise a sponsoring programme for the country’s racing team, organise camps in schools and communities, and organise more systematic training of athletes,” he said.
The minister added that SSC will also manage specialised courses in sports science, particularly for students in Form 1 and Form 3, to encourage early involvement in athletics.
These programmes are expected to produce qualified coaches and trainers, strengthening the state’s capacity to develop athletes from grassroots to professional levels.
Observers believe the investment will not only improve Sarawak’s sports infrastructure but also contribute to broader community development.
By integrating schools, local organisations, and professional bodies into the project, the stadium is expected to become a hub for both competitive and recreational activities.
The RM7.05 million allocation underscores Sarawak’s ambition to position itself as a leader in sports development within Malaysia, ensuring that facilities are on par with national standards while promoting inclusivity and youth empowerment.
