KUCHING, Nov 11 – In a landmark announcement, the Sarawak government has allocated RM1.42 billion under the 2025 budget to advance the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project. This ambitious allocation aims to transform urban mobility with a focus on sustainability and modern infrastructure.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, emphasized the project’s four main components during his budget presentation in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN). The initiatives include constructing three Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) lines, building the Rembus Depot main building, establishing a feeder bus depot, and mass-producing ART vehicles and feeder buses.
“These projects aren’t just about convenience but also about supporting economic growth and environmental sustainability. By developing green mobility solutions, we are reducing carbon emissions and aligning Sarawak’s transportation with global targets for Net Zero Emissions by 2050,” said Abang Johari. He highlighted that this initiative contributes to a cleaner environment while fostering inclusive growth in Sarawak.
The KUTS project is a cornerstone of Sarawak’s vision to modernize public transport, making it accessible and environmentally friendly. Besides Kuching, other cities in Sarawak will benefit from transport infrastructure improvements. For example, RM8 million has been set aside in 2025 for smart buses in Miri City, and RM1 million will go toward constructing a new bus terminal in Kapit, enhancing connectivity in these areas.
Another notable proposal under the Sarawak Budget 2025 is the plan for a new international airport in Kuching. Abang Johari mentioned that a detailed feasibility study for this project will soon be underway, which could further boost Sarawak’s position as a hub for tourism and international business.
The Sarawak government’s commitment to sustainable transportation marks a new era for the state, moving closer to a future where residents enjoy efficient, eco-friendly urban mobility.
