KUCHING: The Power Aquatics Swimming Club (PASC) celebrated a year of success at its 8th Annual Dinner, highlighting swimmer Chereen Ngo Yirui for helping Sarawak shine at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian praised the athletes, especially Chereen, who won two bronze medals for Sarawak. His speech, delivered by Sarawak Premier’s political secretary Kho Teck Wan, recognised the important role aquatic sports played in Sarawak’s achievements at SUKMA 2024.
“The Sarawak swimming team ranked third overall with 9 gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze medals. The diving team became champions, winning 9 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze medals. I am proud that Chereen Ngo from PASC contributed to this success by winning two bronze medals,” he said.
PASC athletes had an active year, competing in 15 events locally and internationally. A key achievement was at the SEA Age Group Swimming Championships in Bangkok, where Malaysia’s water polo team, with five PASC members, earned a bronze medal.
Dr Sim also shared his excitement about Sarawak hosting the 2027 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), a historic first for the state. He expressed confidence that PASC athletes, like Chereen, will continue to make Sarawak proud on bigger stages.
“The success we’ve seen so far gives me hope that more PASC athletes will shine in the future,” he said.
During the dinner, RM43,000 in incentives was announced for 69 swimmers and water polo players to reward their hard work and achievements. Dr Sim also thanked sponsors, parents, coaches, and volunteers for their continued support of PASC and its athletes.
