KUCHING – The Sarawak government’s continuous development strategy has been credited with driving economic growth and creating more skilled job opportunities for local communities.
Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman Yap Yau Sin highlighted the state’s strong economic performance during the debate on the Motion of Appreciation for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak’s speech at the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting.
He pointed to the government’s focus on energy, investment and new industries as key contributors to Sarawak’s resilience.
Yap noted that the rapid expansion of industrial zones in Samalaju and Bintulu, alongside rising foreign investment, has opened up high-income employment opportunities, particularly for young Sarawakians.
He described the current phase as a turning point in building an economic ecosystem capable of sustaining quality jobs and nurturing local talent.
“For the first time in a long time, Sarawak is building an economic ecosystem that is capable of providing more quality job opportunities for the local people,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of transparency and consistent monitoring of projects to ensure that development benefits are felt across society.
According to him, accountability in project implementation is essential to maintain public trust and maximise the impact of investments.
During the debate, Yap raised several infrastructure concerns in Kota Sentosa, including flash floods, drainage issues, silted roads and water supply disruptions.
He explained that these matters are being addressed gradually through collaboration among relevant agencies.
He stressed that while upgrading basic facilities may not be seen as populist measures, they significantly improve daily life and community well-being.
Yap further praised the state’s free tertiary education initiative, describing it as a major step in expanding access to higher learning.
He also welcomed efforts to strengthen Sarawak’s air transport network, which he believes will enhance mobility, educational opportunities and long-term economic growth.
He added that Sarawak is now entering a crucial stage of development involving renewable energy, green economy initiatives, education and industrial transformation.
Sustainable planning and cooperation across all sectors, he said, are vital to ensure that these ambitions are realised.
The Assemblyman’s remarks reflect Sarawak’s broader vision under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which prioritises infrastructure, sustainability and inclusive growth.
By continuing to invest in high-impact projects, the state aims to secure long-term prosperity and improve the quality of life for its people.
