Sarawak Champions Landscape-Based Climate Solutions

Sarawak Champions Landscape-Based Climate Solutions

KUCHING – The Sarawak government has declared its intent to leverage its natural assets to develop landscape-based solutions for global climate challenges.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Openg identified the urgent global need to transition from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources to mitigate carbon emissions.

He stated that the state’s abundant natural resources, including water, sunlight, and biomass, provide a unique foundation for this initiative when integrated with modern technology.

Speaking at the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 4.0), the Premier outlined specific nature-based strategies.

These include utilizing rivers for hydropower generation and employing water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen.

He also cited advanced energy research, such as fusion technology being explored in the United States, as an area of interest for its safety profile compared to traditional nuclear fission.

Furthermore, he highlighted Sarawak’s strong potential for solar energy generation due to its consistent year-round sunlight.

A key emphasis was placed on the critical role of continued research and development to perfect the technologies required to harness these resources effectively and create a reliable renewable energy ecosystem.

The high-level forum was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Sarawak Deputy Premiers, international diplomats, and energy sector leaders.
