KUCHING – The Sarawak Government and people have expressed their appreciation for the service and contributions of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, as the state marked his 80th birthday on Oct 10.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the Governor’s institution plays an important role in promoting unity, stability and harmony in the state’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.

He said preserving harmony required mutual respect, tolerance and a willingness among communities to live together despite their differences.

The Premier also highlighted unity and stability as important foundations for Sarawak’s long-term development plans, efforts to attract investment and ambitions to create better opportunities for future generations.

He said Tun Wan Junaidi’s experience across security, law, politics and national administration reflected his years of service to Sarawak and Malaysia.

Among the Governor’s notable experiences was his service with the Police Field Force in the Rajang Security Command (RASCOM) area, where he was involved in efforts to protect Sarawak against communist threats, the Premier said.

The remarks formed part of the birthday observance, which recognised the Governor’s public service and his role within Sarawak’s constitutional and civic life.

The celebration began with a 17-gun salute and an aerial helicopter fly-past, followed by a parade featuring 107 contingents representing state and federal government departments, private agencies, educational institutions, uniformed bodies and non-governmental organisations.

The range of participating organisations reflected the involvement of different sectors in the state-level celebration, which brought together public institutions and community representatives to mark the occasion.

Among those attending were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak’s Deputy Premiers, and Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, who was also responsible for overseeing the celebration.

Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar was also present. The occasion highlighted the state leadership’s emphasis on maintaining social cohesion across Sarawak’s diverse communities.

The Premier’s remarks linked that shared responsibility with the stability needed to support development and plan for the next generation.
