KUCHING – The Sarawak State Maritime OP MARDOF Coordination Meeting was convened on 18 May 2026 at the Rentap Room, Sarawak State Maritime Complex, Muara Tebas, bringing together key agencies to reinforce collaboration in safeguarding the state’s waters.
The meeting was organised to strengthen cooperation between the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and the Malaysian Fisheries Department in the annual implementation of OP MARDOF.
This operation is a recurring initiative designed to ensure compliance with fisheries laws and enhance maritime safety across Sarawak’s coastal and offshore zones.
Discussions during the session centred on operational coordination, enforcement strategies, and monitoring mechanisms.
Officials highlighted the importance of streamlining procedures to improve efficiency in tackling illegal fishing activities and ensuring that maritime resources are managed sustainably.
The dialogue also underscored the need for stronger surveillance and enforcement to deter violations that threaten both the environment and the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
By aligning enforcement efforts, both agencies aim to create a more integrated system that can respond swiftly to challenges in Sarawak waters.
The meeting emphasised that close cooperation is vital to protect the country’s fisheries resources, which are not only crucial for food security but also for the economic wellbeing of coastal communities.
The coordination meeting also reflected the broader national agenda of enhancing maritime governance. With Sarawak’s extensive coastline and rich marine biodiversity, effective enforcement is seen as essential to maintaining ecological balance while supporting sustainable fisheries.
The partnership between APMM and the Fisheries Department is expected to deliver long-term benefits by reducing resource exploitation and ensuring compliance with international maritime standards.
Officials reiterated that OP MARDOF is more than just an enforcement exercise; it is a comprehensive initiative that integrates monitoring, education, and community engagement.
By involving local stakeholders, the operation seeks to foster greater awareness of maritime laws and encourage responsible fishing practices.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue refining operational strategies and strengthening inter-agency collaboration.
This approach is expected to enhance the effectiveness of OP MARDOF, ensuring that Sarawak’s maritime resources remain protected for future generations.
