Sarawak Metro Engages LAKMNS to Enhance Mosque Connectivity

KUCHING – Sarawak Metro has continued its series of stakeholder engagement sessions, this time meeting with the Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Masjid Negeri Sarawak (LAKMNS) to discuss ways of improving connectivity to mosques located along the alignment of the Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS).

The session provided LAKMNS management with the latest updates on the KUTS project while also serving as a platform to better understand the access needs of worshippers and surrounding communities.

Discussions centred on how the future public transport network could be designed to support mosque-goers more effectively, ensuring that accessibility remains a central consideration in the planning process.

Sarawak Metro emphasised that the engagement was part of its ongoing commitment to community-centred development. By involving stakeholders such as LAKMNS, the company aims to ensure that the KUTS project reflects the needs of diverse groups and delivers meaningful benefits to the wider population.

Officials highlighted that mosques are not only places of worship but also serve as community hubs, hosting educational, cultural, and social activities. Improved connectivity to these locations would therefore enhance community participation and strengthen social cohesion.

The KUTS project, which is a flagship initiative under Sarawak’s transport modernisation agenda, is designed to provide sustainable and efficient mobility solutions for Kuching and its surrounding areas. Stakeholder input is seen as vital to ensuring that the system is inclusive and responsive to local needs.

Sarawak Metro representatives noted that accessibility considerations extend beyond physical infrastructure. They include ensuring that routes, schedules, and facilities are aligned with community patterns, particularly during peak times such as Friday prayers and festive seasons.

LAKMNS welcomed the engagement, acknowledging the importance of integrating mosque connectivity into the broader transport framework. The organisation expressed optimism that the collaboration would lead to practical solutions that benefit worshippers and residents alike.

Community leaders have also voiced support for the initiative, pointing out that improved transport links to mosques could reduce reliance on private vehicles, ease congestion, and promote more sustainable travel habits.

Sarawak Metro reiterated that stakeholder engagement will remain a cornerstone of the KUTS project. By maintaining open dialogue with organisations such as LAKMNS, the company aims to build a transport system that is not only technically sound but also socially inclusive.

The session forms part of a wider series of consultations with government agencies, community organisations, and local stakeholders. Each engagement is intended to gather insights, address concerns, and ensure that the KUTS project is implemented with transparency and accountability.

As the project progresses, Sarawak Metro has pledged to continue working closely with stakeholders to refine plans and deliver a transport system that meets the aspirations of Sarawak’s communities.
