KUCHING, Jan 11: Sarawak reaffirms its commitment to federalism while strongly upholding its autonomy under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg underscored the state’s dedication to equitable governance, ensuring balanced power distribution between federal and state authorities.
Speaking at the opening gala of the Sabah and Sarawak Legal Year 2025 in Kuching, the Premier highlighted Sarawak’s pivotal role as a founding partner of Malaysia. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the state’s constitutional rights for its people’s welfare and the nation’s prosperity.
“By defending the Federal Constitution and asserting our rights and responsibilities, Sarawak is not only securing its future but also contributing to Malaysia’s collective growth,” he said.
Balancing Power for Cooperative Governance
The Premier elaborated on Sarawak’s unique position within the federation, noting its retained authority over critical areas such as land and natural resources. Meanwhile, matters like defence and foreign policies remain under federal jurisdiction.
“This arrangement reflects the true spirit of federalism,” he explained, “ensuring equitable power-sharing to foster cooperative governance without domination.”
He emphasised the harmony achieved through this division of responsibilities, enabling federal and state governments to pursue shared goals for the benefit of all Malaysians.
Vision for Unity and Sustainable Growth
Abang Johari outlined Sarawak’s vision of a united federation, where diversity strengthens the nation. He highlighted the state’s focus on renewable energy, sustainable development, and green initiatives, aligning with Malaysia’s aspirations to become a global leader in these areas.
“By responsibly managing our resources and driving innovation, Sarawak aims to set a benchmark for progress within the federation,” he concluded.
