SIBURAN – Education has been highlighted as a crucial driver in Sarawak’s transition towards a green economy, with a strong emphasis on developing skilled talent in science and technology.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Skills Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said Sarawak is actively nurturing expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), not only through academic pathways but also by equipping students with technical skills suited for industry.
Speaking at the Home & Future Night 3.0: Celebrating the New Year 2026 event at the Shui De Xing Jun Temple in Tapah, he explained that Sarawak’s focus on hydrogen technology reflects its ambition to contribute to a cleaner and healthier world.
“The raw material is water, and we have a lot of this production. However, water alone is not enough, we need knowledge to separate hydrogen and oxygen to produce green energy,” he said.
Hydrogen development has become a cornerstone of Sarawak’s green economy strategy, with the state aiming to position itself as a leader in renewable energy.
The minister noted that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg has been invited by international partners to share insights on green economic initiatives, underscoring the global interest in Sarawak’s approach.
Sagah stressed that education remains the foundation of this transformation, as Sarawak requires more graduates and STEM-trained professionals to sustain future success. He emphasised that without a strong knowledge base, the state’s ambitions in hydrogen and other green technologies cannot be fully realised.
The minister also reflected on Sarawak’s social fabric, describing it as unique due to its diverse mix of races and religions. He said this diversity fosters mutual respect and cooperation, ensuring that no group is seen as superior to another.
“This unity is what makes Sarawak strong, and it is the spirit that will help us build a better Tanah Kenyalang in the future,” he added.
Observers note that Sarawak’s investment in education and innovation aligns with its broader development agenda under Sarawak Maju Makmur 2030. By focusing on renewable energy and STEM education, the state is laying the groundwork for sustainable growth while preparing its workforce for emerging industries.
As 2026 approaches, the emphasis on students and education highlights the role of the younger generation in shaping Sarawak’s economic future. With hydrogen technology and green initiatives at the forefront, the state is positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable development.
