KUCHING (Jan 11): Sarawak is set to take a major step towards sustainable development by integrating the Green Building Index (GBI) into the Buildings Ordinance, with the tabling scheduled for the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) later this year.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, announced the initiative, emphasizing the state’s commitment to green infrastructure.
“When I spoke to the Premier, the first priority was ensuring the Green Building Index’s inclusion in the revised Buildings Ordinance,” said Dr Sim.
He revealed that the updated ordinance would also propose mandatory provisions for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public areas.
“The Premier is focused on ensuring that Sarawak not only uses green electricity but also adopts GBI standards in its building regulations,” he added.
Sarawak’s First GBI-Certified Condominium
Dr Sim made the announcement during the grand launch of d’Isabelle, Sarawak’s first GBI-certified residential high-rise by RJ Group of Companies.
Commending the private sector, Dr Sim said, “I’m very happy to see developers stepping up to address housing needs innovatively. d’Isabelle stands as a testament to Sarawak’s potential for sustainable and energy-efficient developments.”
Dr Sim highlighted the importance of fostering community values in residential developments. “When you buy a condominium like this, you’re not just buying a home — you’re buying into a community where shared values lead to a happier living experience,” he said.
The event was attended by notable figures, including RJ Group CEO Datuk Lily Lim, RJ Group director Ryonna Chuo, and Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Dato Sri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
