KUCHING – The SEA Games 2027, set to be hosted in Sarawak, will be celebrated not only as a major sporting event but also as a vibrant festival for the people, according to Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Mohamed Taufiq Johari.
Speaking after a site visit to the Sarawak Stadium, Dr Taufiq explained that the concept behind the games is to broaden participation by creating an inclusive atmosphere that appeals to both sports fans and the wider community.
He said the event would be designed to attract families and individuals who may not necessarily follow the competitions but wish to enjoy the festive environment.
“At the Sarawak Stadium itself, there will be festivals, sales, booths, and exhibitions so that those who come are not just focused on the sporting events. In fact, some may come simply to bring their families to relax and enjoy the atmosphere,” he said.
The minister noted that discussions with Sarawak’s Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, had led to plans for side activities at key venues.
These activities are expected to enhance the visitor experience and create a lively atmosphere throughout the games.
Dr Taufiq emphasised that the approach aims to make the biennial event more inclusive, serving as a social platform that connects communities from different backgrounds.
He added that the initiative would provide added value to the games, ensuring that the excitement extends beyond the competitions themselves.
The official visit to the stadium was attended by several senior figures, including Dato Sri Abdul Karim; Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dzulkornain Masron.
Also present were Vice President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and Sarawak Chef of Mission for the SEA Games 2027 Azizul Annuar Adenan; Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) Dato Abdul Rashid Yaakub; Director of the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department Lamat Nyalau; and Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak Sports Corporation and Acting Director of the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) Khairul Nizam Morshidi.
Observers note that the decision to frame the SEA Games as a festival reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of inclusivity and community engagement.
By combining sports with cultural and social activities, the state aims to create a memorable experience that resonates with both athletes and the public.
The SEA Games 2027 is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Sarawak, offering not only world-class sporting action but also opportunities for local businesses, cultural showcases, and community participation.
The festival-style approach is anticipated to strengthen Sarawak’s reputation as a host of international events while fostering unity and pride among its people.
