Sebuyau Emerges as Engine for Sarawak’s Coastal Economy

SEBUYAU – This once-sleepy district is now being hailed as an epitome of progress within Sarawak’s coastal regions, undergoing a remarkable transformation driven by comprehensive modern infrastructure and public facilities.

The area’s rapid development was highlighted as a key achievement of the state government’s rural development policies.

Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the Sarawak Deputy Premier, officiated the Sebuyau 2025 Regatta at the Sebuyau Riverbank on Sunday, where he detailed the area’s dramatic evolution.

He contrasted the present reality with Sebuyau’s past, noting that where access was once limited to river boats, the area now benefits from a modern road network, new bridges, and substantially improved basic amenities.

He specifically pointed to the construction of what will become Malaysia’s longest bridge in Sebuyau as a powerful symbol of advancement for the entire coastal region and a tribute to its residents.

The Deputy Premier explained that sustained investment in coastal roads, reliable electricity, clean water, and other public utilities has directly catalysed new economic ventures.

These include the growth of small and medium enterprises, homestay businesses, and river-based tourism.

He emphasised that the correlation between completed infrastructure and expanded economic opportunity for residents is a direct outcome of successful collaboration between the government, community leaders, and the grassroots population.

The state government has reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening Sebuyau’s development. The strategic goal is to establish the town as a major stopover destination on the coastal route and a new growth engine for Sarawak’s economy.

In a related event, the Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications and local Assemblyman, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, provided details on the ongoing Sebuyau Regatta 2025.

The festival, which commenced on October 12, features a diverse programme of activities including fishing and archery contests, futsal and petanque tournaments, and live performances by popular artists.

The event was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Advisor to the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Dato Sri Mohamad Naroden Majais, Batang Lupar Member of Parliament Mohamad Shafizan Kepli, and several other state assemblymen and local officials.

The gathering underscored the broad political support for Sebuyau’s continuing development journey.
