Senior Rider Killed After MPV Crash at Sepupok Bridge, Batu Niah

MIRI: A tragic road accident claimed the life of an elderly motorcyclist after he was believed to have been hit from behind by a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at Sepupok Bridge, Batu Niah, near Miri, last night. The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, especially during night travel along busy routes.

The accident happened at about 8.15pm when the 62-year-old local man was riding his motorcycle along the bridge. According to initial information, the MPV is believed to have struck the victim from behind, causing him to be thrown onto the road with severe injuries. The impact was strong enough that the elderly rider died at the scene.

District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed the incident and said the victim was pronounced dead at 9.40pm by an Assistant Medical Officer from Batu Niah Health Clinic who arrived at the location. He added that the MPV driver did not suffer any injuries in the crash.

Police also stated that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless or dangerous driving causing death. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision, including possible speed, visibility conditions, and road circumstances at the time of the incident.

Authorities have urged members of the public who may have witnessed the accident or have any relevant information to come forward and assist investigations. They may contact the Traffic Investigating Officer, Inspector Mohd Faizal Moktar, or report to the nearest police station.

Police have also reminded all road users to remain cautious, especially when travelling at night or along bridge sections where visibility may be limited. Drivers are advised to maintain safe distances, reduce speed, and always be alert to the presence of motorcycles and other smaller vehicles on the road.
