SERIAN – A large-scale integrated enforcement operation conducted in Serian on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, has resulted in over one hundred traffic-related notices and the detection of eight individuals who tested positive for prohibited substances.
The operation, coordinated by the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) together with its Serian branch, was carried out along two major routes: Jalan Serian–Sri Aman and Jalan Kuching–Serian. The initiative was supported by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM).
The joint exercise was aimed at strengthening compliance with road laws, curbing drug abuse among road users, and ensuring safer travel conditions.
During the course of the operation, enforcement teams inspected 238 vehicles of varying categories. From these checks, 103 non-compliance notices were issued for a range of offences.
Among the violations recorded were the use of high-intensity discharge (HID) and LED lights that failed to meet technical specifications, vehicles carrying loads beyond permitted limits, expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), driving without valid licences, absence of insurance coverage, and breaches of permit conditions. Other technical faults relating to vehicle safety standards were also identified.
Officials emphasised that all enforcement actions were taken strictly in line with current legislation. The JPJ highlighted that such measures are necessary to maintain discipline among road users and to reduce risks associated with unsafe driving practices.
In addition to traffic enforcement, the operation also targeted substance abuse. AADK officers confirmed that six individuals tested positive for drugs. The cases involved two detections of marijuana, two of ketum, and two of methamphetamine.
Meanwhile, PDRM’s Narcotics Division identified two further individuals who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. All cases were referred to the respective agencies for follow-up action under their jurisdiction.
The Immigration Department reported no violations during the exercise, with all individuals inspected found to be in compliance with immigration regulations.
JPJ Sarawak expressed appreciation to all participating agencies for their cooperation and commitment. The department noted that the success of the operation was a result of strong inter-agency collaboration, which will continue to be reinforced in future initiatives.
Authorities stressed that integrated operations of this nature are vital in promoting a culture of compliance among road users. By combining resources and expertise, agencies are able to address multiple issues simultaneously, from traffic offences to drug-related concerns. This holistic approach is seen as essential in creating a safer and more disciplined road environment across Sarawak.
The operation also reflects broader national strategies to enhance road safety and combat substance abuse. Malaysia has long prioritised road safety campaigns, particularly during festive seasons and peak travel periods, when traffic volumes increase significantly. Integrated enforcement exercises are part of these efforts, ensuring that motorists adhere to regulations and that offenders are dealt with promptly.
Local residents welcomed the initiative, noting that such operations help deter reckless behaviour and contribute to community safety. With Serian being a key transit point connecting Kuching to Sri Aman and beyond, maintaining order on its roads is considered crucial for both local commuters and long-distance travellers.
JPJ Sarawak reiterated its commitment to continue working closely with AADK, PDRM, and JIM. The department stated that strategic synergy between agencies will remain a cornerstone of enforcement, ensuring that road users comply with laws and that drug abuse is tackled effectively.
The operation concluded without incident, underscoring the professionalism of the enforcement teams and their dedication to public safety. As JPJ noted, the ultimate goal is to foster a disciplined and prosperous road environment that benefits all users.
