SIBU – The Sibu Region 5 Marine Police Force (PPM) has confiscated approximately 2,000 litres of suspected smuggled diesel worth an estimated RM61,400 during an operation along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman last Tuesday.
PPM Region 5 Commander, ACP Ab Rahman Mat Hasan, said the seizure took place at about 6.30pm during Op Taring Landai, when a team from the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) of PPM W5 Sibu intercepted a white bonded lorry parked at the roadside.
“Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be carrying around 2,000 litres of diesel stored inside a rectangular iron tank at the back of the lorry,” he said in a statement today.
According to ACP Ab Rahman, the driver, a local man, was detained for failing to produce any authorisation letter or permit for the possession of controlled goods. His statement was recorded to assist investigations under the Supply Control Act 1961 (Act 122).
“The suspect could not provide any valid documents from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) regarding the transportation of the diesel. As such, the goods and the vehicle were seized,” he added.
Following documentation by URM PPM W5, the case has been handed over to the Sibu KPDN office for further investigation.
Under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961, possessing, keeping, or transporting controlled goods without a valid permit or special permission from KPDN is a serious offence. Offenders may face imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The PPM reiterated its commitment to curbing fuel smuggling activities, which not only cause losses to the government but also threaten market stability. Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal distribution of controlled goods.
