Six Homes Flooded in Serian as APM Remains on Alert

SERIAN – Six houses in Kampung Batu Gong were affected by flash flooding following continuous heavy rainfall combined with high tide conditions, prompting authorities to remain on full standby.

The Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) Serian confirmed that the incident occurred on Friday, 20 February, after water levels rose suddenly overnight, inundating several homes in the low-lying village.

Initial assessments indicated that floodwaters reached depths of between one and two feet inside affected properties. The situation has caused considerable disruption for families, many of whom are now dealing with damage to belongings and temporary displacement concerns.

Officials explained that the flooding was triggered by a combination of persistent rainfall and elevated tidal levels, a scenario that is known to increase the likelihood of sudden water surges in vulnerable areas. Similar incidents have been recorded in parts of Sarawak during periods of intense weather, particularly in settlements located near rivers or coastal zones.

Although water levels have begun to show signs of gradual decline, authorities stressed that the situation remains under close observation. Response teams are maintaining a high level of readiness to ensure the safety of residents and to respond swiftly should conditions worsen.

At present, no Temporary Evacuation Centre, commonly referred to as a PPS, has been activated. However, APM indicated that this decision may change depending on how water levels evolve throughout the day. If there is no significant improvement by midday, authorities are prepared to recommend the immediate opening of a relief centre to accommodate affected residents.

Emergency personnel continue to monitor the area while advising villagers to remain cautious, particularly as weather conditions can shift quickly. Residents have been urged to stay informed through official updates and to prioritise their safety during this period.

Flood management remains a key concern in Serian and other districts in Sarawak, especially during seasons of prolonged rainfall. Local agencies regularly coordinate efforts to mitigate risks and provide assistance to communities facing natural hazards.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to responding promptly and effectively, underscoring the importance of preparedness in safeguarding lives and property.
