KUCHING – Construction of the SM04 Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) station near Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has reached another milestone, with concreting works for the pedestrian link bridge currently underway.
The station, strategically positioned near the entrance to UNIMAS, the university’s new teaching hospital, and commercial as well as residential developments along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway, is expected to provide enhanced connectivity for commuters.
Its location is designed to serve both students and residents, easing travel between educational, healthcare and business hubs.
Sarawak Metro, the agency overseeing the ART project, confirmed that the station will integrate with a hydrogen-powered feeder bus service.
This service is intended to provide first-mile and last-mile connectivity, ensuring that passengers can travel seamlessly to and from the ART network.
The inclusion of hydrogen buses reflects Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions and reducing carbon emissions.
The ART system itself is part of the state’s wider initiative to modernise public transport infrastructure, offering an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional modes of travel.
By linking key areas along the Kuching-Samarahan corridor, the project aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve accessibility for thousands of daily commuters.
Local stakeholders have welcomed the progress, noting that the station will play a vital role in supporting UNIMAS students, hospital staff, and residents in nearby housing estates.
The pedestrian link bridge currently under construction is expected to provide safe and convenient access to the station, further enhancing its usability.
The ART project represents a significant investment in Sarawak’s future mobility, combining advanced technology with sustainable energy solutions.
Once completed, the SM04 station near UNIMAS will stand as a symbol of the state’s commitment to modern infrastructure and community-focused development.
