KUCHING – The Smart Street Lighting Project in Kampung Nombor Satok was officially launched on 13 June 2026, marking a significant step forward in Sarawak’s smart city development initiatives.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister of Utilities Sarawak (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) and N.8 Satok Assemblyman, YB Datuk Haji Ibrahim Baki.
He was joined by Sarawak Public Works Director, Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Dr. Cassidy Morris, and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Director, Encik Ramzi Abdillah, alongside representatives from government agencies and local communities.
The project demonstrates the government’s commitment to enhancing safety, comfort and sustainability for residents through modern lighting technology.
The Smart LED Street Lighting system is a key component of the Kampung Nombor Satok Beautification Project, which focuses on improving quality of life by integrating smart city solutions.
Phase 1 of the initiative, implemented in December 2020, saw the installation of 210 smart street lights along major roads, including Jalan Patingan, Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, Jalan Haji Mataim, Jalan Muda Hashim, Jalan Bolhassan, Jalan Patinggi Ali, Jalan Haji Kassan and Jalan Tanjung.
The system allows real-time online monitoring, enabling faster inspections, maintenance and repairs. It also reduces complaints related to faulty street lights by detecting disruptions early.
The platform provides continuous analysis of lamp performance, energy consumption and damage status, while remote control functions allow adjustments to brightness and activation from any location.
Following the success of Phase 1, Phase 2 was launched in 2024 and completed in August the same year, adding 369 more smart street lights across Kampung Nombor Satok.
This brought the total to 579 units, making the area one of the most comprehensively covered communities under DBKU’s administration.
Further expansion continued under the RTP N.8 Satok Project in 2025, which installed 42 additional smart street lights along Jalan Green and Jalan Nanas Barat.
This phase was completed in February 2026, reinforcing the area’s position as a model for smart infrastructure in Sarawak.
The Smart Street Lighting Project reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of adopting sustainable technologies to improve urban living standards.
By combining efficiency with innovation, the initiative is expected to serve as a benchmark for future smart city projects across the state.
