KUCHING – The unveiling of the new St Peter’s Church in Padungan marks a historic milestone for Sarawak’s Catholic community and underscores the state’s commitment to religious harmony. The RM38 million construction project, now fully funded with a final RM1 million contribution from the Sarawak government, was celebrated in a ceremony symbolizing faith and unity.
Representing Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas presented the RM1 million cheque from the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) to Roman Catholic Archbishop Dato Dr Simon Poh.
The event, held at the church, was witnessed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee, UNIFOR Director Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau, and Father Vincent Chin, Rector of St Peter’s Church. The state’s total contribution through UNIFOR reached RM3 million, complementing public donations and community fundraising efforts that overcame significant challenges during the pandemic.
“This church is more than a place of worship—it embodies vision, resilience, and faith,” said the Premier in his speech, delivered by Uggah. He highlighted its central Kuching location, surrounded by diverse religious institutions, as a testament to Sarawak’s tradition of coexistence.
Archbishop Poh expressed gratitude, noting, “The pandemic disrupted our pledges, but with the government’s RM3 million and community support, we’ve achieved our goal.” Minor funds for interior furnishings are still needed, but core construction costs are fully settled.
Built with local materials and expertise, St Peter’s Church showcases Sarawak’s architectural prowess. Poh described it as a shared achievement, admired by people of all faiths. “You no longer need to visit Europe to see a cathedral—Kuching has one,” he said, emphasizing its role as a landmark of peace, hope, and unity for Sarawak’s future.
