JOHOR BAHRU – A 28-year-old primary school teacher in Johor Bahru has been brought before the Sessions Court and Magistrate’s Court on multiple serious charges involving the alleged sexual assault of a female student and possession of obscene material. The accused, Mohamad Amirul Awang Meran, pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read out before three different judges on Tuesday.
The case has drawn strong public attention due to the nature of the allegations and the position of the accused as an educator still serving at a primary school in Masai.
According to court proceedings, the accused is facing seven counts of physical sexual assault involving a student who was 11 years old at the time the alleged incidents began in 2024. The offences are said to have taken place at different dates between February 2024 and August 2025, in a vehicle at the Masai Playground parking area.
Further charges state that additional alleged incidents continued into 2025, involving repeated acts at similar locations. The charges were filed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act.
In a separate court, the accused also faced two additional charges for allegedly possessing obscene material stored in mobile phones. These offences were said to have occurred in May 2026 at an industrial area in Masai. These charges fall under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code, which carries penalties of imprisonment, fines, or both upon conviction.
During proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutors requested bail of RM20,000 and additional conditions if bail was granted. However, the defence lawyer appealed for a lower amount, stating the accused earns about RM3,000 monthly, supports his family in Terengganu, and is also responsible for a younger sibling still studying. The defence further informed the court that the accused has been diagnosed with moderate depression.
After considering submissions from both sides, the court set bail at RM10,000 at the Sessions Court level, with additional bail amounts of RM3,000 and RM6,000 imposed in related proceedings at other courts. The court also imposed strict conditions, including a prohibition from contacting or harassing the victim and witnesses, monthly police reporting, and surrender of passport if available.
The case has been scheduled for mention again on July 13 for document submission and further case management.
The proceedings remain ongoing, and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court.
