KOTA SAMARAHAN – A targeted enforcement operation aimed at curbing drink driving has resulted in the arrest of three individuals in the Kota Samarahan district. The crackdown, known locally as Operation Mabuk, was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the district police headquarters during the early hours of 31 July 2026.
The operation commenced at 11:00 pm on 30 July and continued until 3:00 am the following morning. Officers set up a checkpoint along Jalan La Promenade, a key thoroughfare in the area, to screen motorists for signs of intoxication. The initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of law enforcement agencies to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by impaired driving.
A total of eleven police personnel were deployed for the operation. The team included a senior police officer, four traffic specialists, and seven members from various other branches within the force. This multi-disciplinary approach ensured that the checkpoint was managed efficiently and that all legal protocols were strictly followed during the inspections.
Throughout the duration of the operation, officers stopped and checked 73 vehicles. In total, 81 individuals were subjected to preliminary screenings. The high volume of checks indicates a significant level of traffic activity in the area during the late-night hours, prompting authorities to maintain a visible presence to deter potential offenders.
Using initial alcohol screening devices, specifically the SD2+ model, officers tested four individuals who exhibited signs of impairment or failed preliminary observations. Of those tested, three local men returned positive results for alcohol consumption. They were subsequently arrested and will face charges under the relevant traffic laws governing driving under the influence.
In addition to the arrests for drink driving, the operation also addressed other traffic violations. Officers issued 20 summonses under Section 257 of the Road Transport Act 1987. These summonses covered a range of minor to moderate traffic offences, highlighting the broader scope of the enforcement effort beyond just alcohol-related incidents. Such measures are designed to promote overall compliance with traffic regulations among motorists.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has stated that such operations will continue to be strengthened in the future. The primary goal is to curb the prevalence of drink driving, which remains a leading cause of serious road accidents in Malaysia. By increasing the frequency and visibility of these checkpoints, authorities aim to raise the level of legal compliance among drivers and ensure the safety of all road users.
Road safety officials emphasise that preventing accidents is a collective responsibility. While enforcement plays a crucial role, public awareness and individual accountability are equally important. Drivers are reminded that consuming alcohol before operating a vehicle not only endangers their own lives but also poses a significant risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists sharing the road.
The message from the police is clear: do not drive under the influence of alcohol. The consequences can be severe, including legal penalties, financial burdens, and potentially fatal outcomes. Community cooperation is essential in maintaining safe roads, and residents are encouraged to support these initiatives by planning alternative transport options if they intend to consume alcohol.
