KUCHING, 16 April 2025 – A massive fire engulfed a plastics manufacturing factory along Jalan Stephen Yong late last night, completely destroying the structure and sparking community concern over fire safety at industrial sites.
The fire broke out around 9:30 PM at a warehouse situated along Jalan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Wee Boon Ping, believed to be linked to the factory’s operations. Flames rapidly consumed the non-permanent building, which spanned more than 160 square feet.

An emergency call was received at 9:52 PM, and fire crews arrived at the scene by 10:12 PM. According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre (PGO), the fire had already fully engulfed the structure by the time the first team arrived.

Firefighters launched immediate efforts using two 300-foot hoses and three nozzles, supported by open water sources and tankers. A total of 20 personnel from three fire stations—Batu Lintang, Padungan, and Tabuan Jaya—worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.
Deputy Fire Chief II, Mohamad Rafie, commended the team’s swift action which successfully prevented the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.
“The factory’s flammable structure made this a high-risk situation. We implemented fire breaks in key areas to stop the blaze from spreading. Thankfully, no casualties or injuries were reported,” he said.
The fire was finally contained at 10:57 PM, though firefighters remained at the site overnight to prevent any possible re-ignition.

N13 Batu Kitang assemblyman, YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang, along with the SUPP N13 Youth Team, led by Youth Chief Cr. Alvin Chong, visited the site to express support and gratitude to the frontliners.
“Huge thanks to our brave firefighters and the fast response from police. Your courage keeps Kuching safe,” said YB Lo.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Updates will be shared once available.
