BATU KAWA – A distinctive Wesak Day celebration was held at the San Seng Tong Buddhist Association Hall, combining traditional rituals with contemporary performances in a unique showcase of faith and culture.
The event, titled “Remembering the Buddha in a Bustling World”, brought together chanting of sutras, flower offerings, lantern passing, meditation, and mindfulness visualisation.
These practices were complemented by musical performances from local youth, reflecting a blend of heritage and modern creativity.
A striking feature of the celebration was the backdrop of a jade-carved mural depicting the Diamond Sutra Transformation Tableau.
This artwork is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world, distinguished by the inclusion of a black cat and a white cat among the Buddha figures. The mural provided a symbolic reminder of harmony and balance in a fast-paced world.
The San Seng Tong Buddhist Culture and Education Centre, equipped with modern facilities, served as the venue for the gathering.
The centre’s design and purpose highlight Sarawak’s commitment to fostering cultural education while embracing contemporary approaches to community engagement.
The Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, congratulated the organisers for creating a celebration that resonates with both tradition and modernity.
He noted that the combination of rituals and youth-led performances reflects the spirit of Sarawak nation building in 2026, where cultural preservation coexists with innovation in the era of artificial intelligence.
The event underscored the role of religious and cultural institutions in strengthening community bonds.
By integrating mindfulness practices with artistic expression, the celebration offered participants a chance to reflect on spiritual values while engaging with contemporary forms of creativity.
Observers highlighted that such events not only mark important religious occasions but also contribute to social cohesion.
They provide opportunities for dialogue across generations, encouraging younger participants to take an active role in cultural traditions while adapting them to modern contexts.
As Sarawak continues to balance development with cultural preservation, initiatives like this Wesak Day celebration demonstrate how communities can honour their heritage while embracing new ways of expression.
The fusion of ritual and modern performance at San Seng Tong stands as a testament to the adaptability and resilience of Sarawak’s cultural identity.
