Serian, May 14, 2025 – A woman in her 30s sustained minor injuries after a self-driving car accident along Jalan Pan Borneo at Mile 29 heading towards Serian this afternoon.

According to a spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre (PGO), an emergency call was received at 2:54 PM, and a team from the Serian Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was dispatched and arrived at the scene by 3:09 PM.

The incident involved a Perodua Viva believed to have lost control before crashing into a roadside barrier. The woman was rescued from the vehicle by members of the public before the arrival of the fire and rescue team.

“The victim suffered injuries to her forehead and right ear. The Fire and Rescue Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team provided first aid before transporting her to Serian Hospital for further treatment,” the statement said.

The rescue operation was led by PBK I Nasihin Jaum along with seven firefighters and concluded at 3:14 PM after ensuring the area was safe.

This incident has raised concerns among the public regarding the safety of self-driving vehicle technology, especially on busy routes like Jalan Pan Borneo, which is frequently used by road users.

Authorities are reminding drivers to remain cautious when using autonomous vehicle systems and to always follow road safety guidelines.
