KUCHING – Police have arrested two local men in connection with a reported vehicle component theft in the Jalan Matang area of Kuching, with both suspects remanded for four days to assist investigations.
The arrests were carried out on 25 August 2026 between about 1.40 pm and 2.40 pm by a team from the Kuching District Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department.
According to Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the two suspects, aged 26 and 29, were detained in areas around Kuching and Padawan.
Police believe they are linked to a vehicle component theft reported on 24 August in the Jalan Matang area.
Police also seized an item believed to be connected to the investigation, although the police statement did not provide further details about the item. Checks found that both suspects have previous criminal records, police said.
A remand application was subsequently approved by a magistrate, allowing both men to be held for four days to facilitate further investigations into the case.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 379A(1) of the Penal Code, which concerns theft involving motor vehicles or their components.
Under the provision cited by police, a person convicted of the offence may face imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than seven years and may also be liable to a fine.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the two suspects, and investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported theft and determine the extent of their alleged involvement.
