Lahad Datu, Sabah – Four unmarried couples were arrested in Lahad Datu during a special enforcement raid known as ‘Operation Valentine’ conducted by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) on the eve of Valentine’s Day.
JHEAINS Lahad Datu Religious Administration Officer, Mardi Ariffin, stated that the operation took place from 9.30 pm to 3.00 am, targeting hotels and budget accommodations suspected of being used for immoral activities.
“A total of 12 JHEAINS enforcement officers, assisted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), carried out inspections in several rooms across four budget hotels within the district. As a result, four unmarried couples in their 20s were arrested for the offence of seclusion,” Mardi said.
During the raid, officers also discovered condoms and strong drugs believed to be used by the detained individuals. The couples were taken to the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters for further investigation.
“All individuals involved will be charged under Section 84 of the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment. If found guilty, they could face a maximum fine of RM2,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both,” he added.
Mardi explained that ‘Operation Valentine’ is part of JHEAINS’ continuous effort to prevent immoral activities within the Muslim community.
“We aim to ensure that our society, especially Muslims, does not engage in activities that go against Islamic teachings, such as adultery. This includes preventing individuals from being in compromising situations, whether in private or public spaces,” he said.
The operation serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding religious values and avoiding situations that could lead to immoral acts. Authorities urge the public, particularly young couples, to be mindful of their actions and adhere to the laws governing Islamic conduct in Malaysia.
