KUCHING: Three individuals have been arrested and a significant amount of syabu (methamphetamine) seized in two separate police operations this week, according to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters.
Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, detailed the first raid which occurred at 12:50 am yesterday at the Timberland Park parking area. There, a 32-year-old local man and a 29-year-old local woman were apprehended. Police recovered 52.75 grams of suspected syabu, estimated to be worth around RM5,300.
ACP Alexson revealed that initial investigations showed the male suspect tested positive for both amphetamine and methamphetamine and had a history of 10 previous drug-related offenses. The female suspect also tested positive for the same drugs and had 11 prior drug-related criminal records.
The two suspects have been remanded for six days, until April 30th, to assist with the ongoing investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This section carries a heavy penalty, including the death sentence or life imprisonment, and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.
In a separate operation last night, around 9:45 pm, a 20-year-old local man was arrested by the roadside near Kampung Muara Tebas. A search of this suspect yielded 33.45 grams of suspected syabu, with an estimated value of RM3,300.
Interestingly, ACP Alexson stated that a urine screening test on the 20-year-old man came back negative for drugs, and he had no prior criminal record. This suspect has been remanded for five days, until April 29th, for further investigation under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This section carries a sentence of life imprisonment or a jail term of not less than five years, along with a minimum of 10 strokes of the cane.
ACP Alexson emphasized the crucial role of public cooperation in the ongoing fight against drug-related activities. He urged the community to continue providing information to the police regarding drug distribution and abuse.
