BINTULU: Bintulu is steadily gaining recognition as a promising regional hub for extreme sports following the successful hosting of the Bintulu Mountain Bike Challenge 2025. The event, held at Wisma Bintulu on Saturday, drew 132 participants from both Malaysia and abroad.
The event’s closing and prize-giving ceremony was officiated by Tanjong Batu State Assembly Member (ADUN), Johnny Pang Leong Ming, who praised the organisers and participants for the smooth and professional execution.
“This championship not only embodies the spirit of sportsmanship but also elevates Bintulu and Sarawak’s standing as international sports destinations,” he said in his speech.
International participants from Brunei, Indonesia, and even South Africa highlighted the global appeal of the event. Johnny Pang noted that such initiatives contribute to community building, encourage healthy lifestyles, and stimulate local economic activity.
He emphasised mountain biking as a growing avenue in sports tourism that could open new business prospects and enhance Bintulu’s global visibility.
“The state government, through the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), will continue to back efforts like these in line with the Forward Sarawak 2030 agenda. We envision the development of world-class MTB tracks that benefit the youth and local communities,” he added.
The tournament featured six categories with a total prize pool of RM20,550, positioning it as one of the most prestigious events in Malaysia’s extreme sports calendar.
Top winners included Zaenal Fanani (Men’s Open), Supian Nor (Men’s Masters), and Drevionna Magdelynna Davin (Women’s Open).
Johnny Pang also proposed that the championship be included in the official state or national sports calendar to offer greater exposure for local talent and establish it as an internationally recognised annual event.
